STORY SO FAR

Founded in 2017 (launched 2018) by father-and-son team Ian and Trevor Hughes from a base in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. Ian Hughes brought 36+ years of senior commercial experience in high-end cycling — sales, marketing, brand building and UK distribution for Marin, Scott, Storck, Sarto and Lightweight Wheels among others — before deciding to design 'a proper, high-performance British bike, able to take British riding conditions in its stride'. Vielo's defining technical bet is the 1x drivetrain: every Vielo frame is engineered exclusively around a single chainring, allowing the chainstays, bottom-bracket area and rear triangle to be optimised in ways a frame built for both 1x and 2x compatibility cannot match. The launch model — the V+1 gravel bike — uses an 890g UD carbon frame with passive rear-suspension geometry; the range now includes the V+1 gravel and R+1 road platforms, with each bike hand-finished to customer specification by the team in Gateshead. Vielo is sold via a small network of specialist dealers (Bespoke Cycling in the UK; Eat Sleep Cycle in Girona, etc.) plus direct.

MADE BY

Per the brand's own statements: every Vielo bike is 'designed in Britain, engineered in Germany and hand-finished to customer specification in Britain'. Conceptual design and frame architecture are owned by Vielo in Gateshead; structural engineering, FEA and lay-up development is carried out by an engineering partner in Germany; carbon frame moulding is contracted out to a partner factory (Far East, industry standard for performance carbon, not publicly named); each completed bike is built up to the customer's specification (paint detailing, groupset, wheels, finishing kit) by Vielo in Gateshead before shipping. Component groupsets and wheels are sourced internationally (Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo plus partners such as Lightweight, Reynolds and Hunt). No published parts-by-percentage breakdown beyond this design / engineering / assembly split.
