Our policies
Demalo is an independent directory of brands that design and make things in Britain. This page explains how we choose the brands we feature, how we keep the directory accurate and independent, and how we handle your information when you use the site.
How brands are chosen
Every brand in the directory is researched before it is listed. To qualify, a brand has to pass at least one of two tests:
Designed in Britain: its products are designed by a team based in the UK.
Made in Britain: its products are manufactured in the UK.
Many brands do both. Where a brand designs here but manufactures abroad, or makes only part of its range in the UK, we say so. Each profile sets out where the brand’s products are designed, where they are made and, where we can confirm it, the region they are made in.
Checking that brands are legitimate
Before we add a brand, we check it against public records:
Companies House: we look for an active company and note its registered office. We don’t list a company that has been dissolved or is in liquidation.
FCA Firm Checker: we search the Financial Conduct Authority’s register and warning list. Most product brands aren’t regulated by the FCA, so not appearing on the register is normal. A brand on the warning list is not listed.
These checks confirm that a business exists and isn’t a known scam. They aren’t an endorsement of any product, and they don’t replace your own judgement before you buy.
Independence
Brands can’t pay to be listed, and they can’t pay to change what we write about them. When we feature a brand prominently, that’s an editorial choice. If we ever earn commission from links on the site, we’ll label those links clearly.
Accuracy, corrections and right of reply
Supply chains change. A brand might move production, open a new workshop or change hands. We build each profile from the brand’s own information, public records and published reporting, and we link to our sources where we can.
If you represent a brand and think something we’ve written is inaccurate, or you spot anything that’s wrong or out of date, please tell us. We’ll review it, correct anything that’s wrong, and note significant changes. Brands are also welcome to suggest a brand for the directory.
Links to other websites
Profiles link to brands’ own websites and to other sources. We aren’t responsible for the content, products or privacy practices of those sites, and any purchase you make is between you and the seller.
Your privacy
You can use Demalo without creating an account. We use privacy-friendly analytics to see how many people visit and which pages they read. It doesn’t identify you personally.
If you contact us or sign up for updates, we use your email address only to reply or to send what you asked for. We never sell or share it, and you can unsubscribe at any time. Under UK data protection law you can ask us what information we hold about you and ask us to correct or delete it.
Cookies and cookie settings
Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device. They can help a site work properly, remember your choices or measure how it’s used. Here’s how Demalo uses them:
Essential cookies: our website host may set a small number of cookies that keep the site secure and working. The site can’t run without them, so they can’t be switched off here.
Analytics: we count visits with cookie-free analytics, so nothing is stored on your device to measure how you use the site.
Functional and advertising cookies: we don’t use any. We don’t run adverts or track you across other websites.
Because we only use essential cookies, we don’t ask you to accept cookies when you arrive. If that changes, we’ll ask for your consent before setting any non-essential cookies, and we’ll update this page.
Managing your cookie settings
You can view, block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. Blocking essential cookies may stop parts of the site from working. Help for the most common browsers:
Brand profiles link to other websites, which have their own cookie policies. We don’t control the cookies those sites set.
Brand names, logos and images
Brand names, logos and product images belong to their respective owners. We use them only to identify and illustrate the brands we write about, as editorial content. Their use doesn’t mean a brand endorses Demalo, or that we have a commercial relationship with it.
Where we can, we use images from brands’ own press materials or with their permission, and we credit them. If you own an image or trademark shown on Demalo and would like it credited differently, replaced or removed, contact us. We’ll act on the request promptly, usually within five working days.
