NEAL'S YARD REMEDIES
STORY SO FAR
Founded in 1981 by Romy Fraser, a teacher and single parent who left education to open the first shop in Neal’s Yard, Covent Garden, London, trading initially as Neal’s Yard Apothecary before adopting the Neal’s Yard Remedies name in 1986. The business was an extension of Neal’s Yard Wholefoods, London’s first wholefood shop, whose owner Nicholas Saunders split the premises with Fraser and guaranteed her bank loan. Fraser sold the company in 2005 to the Kindersley family — former publishers and owners of the Sheepdrove organic farm — who moved the head office and opened a new, purpose-built eco-factory at Peacemarsh, near Gillingham, Dorset, that employed 222 people by 2018. The business is now co-owned by Peter, Barnabas and Anabel Kindersley. Neal’s Yard Remedies was the first company certified by the Soil Association and the first certified carbon neutral, and it also runs a direct-selling arm, NYR Organics.
