STORY SO FAR

The original Mini was launched in August 1959 by the British Motor Corporation (BMC), designed by Sir Alec Issigonis in response to the 1956 Suez Crisis fuel shortage. The transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive layout freed up roughly 80% of the floorpan for passengers and luggage and went on to define small-car packaging for decades. Marketed initially as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor, the Mini passed through BMC, British Motor Holdings, British Leyland and the Rover Group, before BMW acquired the brand as part of the 1994 Rover Group purchase. BMW launched the modern MINI in 2001, retaining the Plant Oxford site in Cowley, where Minis have been built since the original. Today the brand sits in the BMW Group portfolio and is transitioning to all-electric production at Plant Oxford from 2030, with the new electric MINI Cooper 3-door and MINI Aceman entering UK production in 2026 alongside parallel production in Zhangjiagang, China (joint venture with Great Wall Motor).

DESIGNED BY

Modern MINI design is led by BMW Group's MINI design team, headed by Oliver Heilmer, working principally from BMW Group's Munich design organisation. The original 1959 Mini was designed in Britain by Sir Alec Issigonis. UK-based design today: No (brand identity is British, but the current design programme is BMW-led from Germany).

MADE BY

Per BMW Group's own statements, MINIs sold in the UK are largely built in the 'MINI production triangle': Plant Oxford (Cowley) for body shop, paint shop and final assembly; Plant Swindon for body pressings and sub-assemblies; and Plant Hams Hall near Birmingham for petrol engines (covering ~60% of Oxford-built MINIs). Diesel engines are imported from BMW's Steyr plant in Austria. From 2026, the next-generation electric MINI Cooper and Aceman will be produced both at Oxford and at a Spotlight Automotive joint-venture plant in Zhangjiagang, China. No published parts-by-percentage breakdown beyond plant-level allocation.
