STORY SO FAR

Founded in 1856 by 21-year-old Thomas Burberry, a former draper's apprentice, when he opened a drapery shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire. By 1870 the business focused on outdoor wear; in 1879 Burberry invented gabardine — a tightly woven, water-resistant yet breathable cotton in which the yarn is waterproofed before weaving. The fabric outfitted polar explorers including Shackleton and Amundsen, and was adapted into the trench coat worn by British officers in the First World War, after which it became a civilian icon. The Burberry Check first appeared as a coat lining in the 1920s and evolved into a recognised pattern in its own right. Now a London-headquartered global luxury house, listed on the LSE, with a heritage line still made in Yorkshire.

Burberry has also announced a £50m+ investment in new trench manufacturing and weaving facilities in Leeds.
